In the early 1990s Andy Goldsworthy was invited to propose a project for Cumbria, a region of outstanding natural beauty where the landscape has been moulded for centuries by agriculture and in particular by sheep-farming. His response was to repair or rebuild a swathe of Cumbrian sheepfolds – with the intention that, wherever possible the folds would still be accessible to sheep. Among the sculptures are slate works and balanced stones embedded in walls and a series of sixteen folds each containing a massive boulder rolled down from the nearby hillside. By 2006 over forty structures had been completed: it is this extraordinary project that forms the core of Enclosure. This impressive volume is testament to Goldsworthy's lifelong interest in the land, its history and its inhabitants. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was born in the south of France to an eccentric aristocratic family. In 1882, he moved to Paris to study art, and became friendly with several young artists including Van Gogh, Bonnard and Vuillard. He set up a studio in the bohemian quarter of Montmartre where he lived for the rest of his short life, sketching the characters in the theatres, brothels and cabarets of the Parisian world. His dissolute lifestyle, coupled with alcoholism and syphilis, led to a stroke from which he died at the age of thirty-six, leaving a prodigious amount of breathtaking work. This book explores his colourful life and work. Beginning as a painter, he was principally influenced by Degas and Japanese prints, and examples of particular influences are included in the book. Many of Toulouse-Lautrec's famous portrayals of women in public and private life are shown, with images of women bathing, dressing or simply relaxing as well as performing in cabaret and theatre. Egon Schiele lived in Vienna during its last years as capital of the declining Habsburg Empire. Rejected by his family and hounded by society for his interest in young girls, he expressed through his art a deep and bewildering loneliness and an obsession with sexuality, death and decay. Schiele died at the age of twenty-eight, yet he left behind him a body of work that sustains a huge public reputation and myth. David Bailey may be a master of the medium, but he also readily accepts that photography is technologically driven. The snapshot is a part of our visual culture and many photographs have been taken millions and millions of times, with just slight variations, such as the identity of the people in a family portrait.
