Jürgen Vollmer has lead the traditional peripatetic life of a photographer and this book contains images of the people he has photographed in different countries across the globe. What is different from the usual collection of travel portraits is that often his subjects have been famous actors and literary figures. The first part of the book, On Filmsets, consists of a series on two dozen American and a dozen French filmsets over the past four decades. The filmstars include among many others Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Sean Connery, Heath Ledger, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Jeanne Moreau. The portraits of directors include among others Francis Ford Coppola, Tony Scott, Roman Polanski, Barbra Streisand and Alain Resnais. Prominently featured are photos of Rudolf Nureyev, taken in 1966 during the filming of a ballet film. In January 2003 British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy was invited to create a work of art for the National Gallery of Art. The project began with a series of ephemeral works on Government Island in Stafford County, Virginia. From this phase a series of photographic suites and a diary remain. The second phase of the project resulted in Roof, a permanent, site-specific sculpture at the National Gallery comprising nine stacked-slate domes installed over the course of nine weeks by Goldsworthy, his assistant, and a group of British drystone wallers in the winter of 2004-2005. «What do flowers, skulls and contact sheets have in common? Not much you might think, but David Bailey begs to differ. This book combines Bailey's recent colour photographs of still-life flowers and skulls, with black and white contacts of his iconic celebrity portraiture and fashion work from the 1960s. One might analyze Bailey's combination of these bodies of work in light of the vanitas tradition, seeing it as a commentary on mortality and the passing of time. Indeed such a reading is tempting when comparing images of wilting roses with contacts of Brian Jones and John Lennon, both of whom appear confident in the prime of youth, unaware of the fates that will befall them. But perhaps this is too much, and Bailey himself would probably tell you so. For him, the flowers, skulls and contacts are simply different projects that he was working on simultaneously and decided to combine because he likes the idea of «eclectic collections». Enough said.»
